STEREOTACTIC SPINE SURGERY
Like other places in the body tumours can also form in the spine. Spinal tumours can be either benign i.e. non-cancerous or malignant i.e. cancerous. More than 90 percent of spine tumors are metastatic. They arise from cancers that begin in a different part of the body and can result in painful symptoms requiring invasive treatment procedures. If left untreated, spine tumors can destroy the bones of the spine, which leads to a loss of stability of the spinal column, and often compression of the spinal cord or nerves.
STEREOTACTIC PROCEDURE
Sterotactic surgery is basically a non invasive radio surgery for the spinal tumours. It is more for the pain which is due to spinal tumour.
The procedure of stereotactic surgery can be done to treat the spinal tumour or can be part of a multi discipilinary treatment. The stereotactic surgery works on same principal as radiation therapy. Focussed radiation is given to the tumour which not only shrinks the tumour but also give relief in pain. It delivers precise radiation to the tumor using a three-dimensional targeting system
COST OF TREATMENT
Stereotactic surgery or radio surgery for the spinal tumours is available at very few places in New Delhi. It is mostly done on the OPD basis unless the patient is already admitted for a multi discipilinary treatment for cancer and the stereotactic procedure or surgery for the spinal tumour is a part of main treatment. Cost of the procedure depends upon the size and location of the tumour. It also varies with the number of sittings that the patient may need for the best results. In most of the cases evenmone sitting gives good results.
